چکیده
Aims: This study was carried out to explore the prevalence of HBV and HCV infections among type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients and risk factors. This crosssectional study was conducted at BIRDEM General Hospital, Dhaka, Bangladesh between January 2012 and March 2013. Subjects and Methods: A total of 1024 type 2 diabetics were included. Wellstructured questionnaire was used to collect demographic profile and history of the study populations. Venous blood samples were collected to screen HBV, HCV infections and to estimate other biochemical tests. Data analysis was carried out using SPSS version 16.0. Descriptive analysis was performed and results expressed as means±SD and n (%). P <0.05 was considered significant. Results: Prevalence of HBV in type 2 diabetics was 3.0% (31/1024) and HCV was 0.48% (5/1024). Among all subjects, mean±SD of body mass index (BMI) was 24.9±3.8, fasting blood sugar mmol/L was 10.7±4.6, post prandial blood sugar mmol/L was 17.6±7.2, fasting cholesterol mg/dl was 198.5±81.3, haemoglobin gm/dl was 13.1±1.5, serum ALT IU/L was 40.5±36.0. Mean serum ALT was significantly higher among HBV-positive T2DM participants (57.7 IU/L) than HBV-negative participants (36.2 IU/L) (P=0.001). Conclusions: The seroprevalence of HBV was higher than that of HCV in T2DM patients. T2DM patients should take necessary preventive measures like prophylactic vaccination to reduce the risk of HBV infection and its consequences.

Evaluation of the Seroprevalence of Transfusion Transmissible Infections among Blood Donors in a Tertiary Care Hospital of North India
Background: Unsafe transfusion practices put patients at high risk of transfusion transmissible infections. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of transfusion transmissible infections (including Human Immunodeficiency Virus [HIV] 1 and 2, Hepatitis B Virus [HBV], Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) and syphilis) during a period of 18 months among blood donors in the Blood Bank of Lady Hardinge Medical Coll...

Abstract Background Thalassemia patients that are conventionally treated by a regular transfusion regimen are exposed to blood born viral infections. The aim of this study was to investigate the seroprevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV) , and human Immunodeficiency virus(HIV) among all multitransfused thalassemia patients in west north of Iran. Material and methods A...
متن کاملThe susceptibility of patients with type-2 diabetes to hepatitis C virus infection during long-term haemodialysis.
BACKGROUND Type-2 diabetes has emerged as the commonest cause of end stage renal disease (ESRD) requiring long-term haemodialysis (HD) that constitutes a high-risk environment for the transmission of hepatitis C virus (HCV). The likelihood of acquiring HCV infection in this rapidly growing population on HD conceivably vulnerable to viral infections has not been well studied. The present study a...
متن کاملThe Prevalence of Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infections among β-thalassemia Major: A Multicenter Survey in Lorestan, West of Iran
Background: Although regular frequent blood transfusion improves overall survival of multi-transfused patients like β-thalassemic ones, it carries a definite risk of infection with blood-borne viruses such as viral hepatitis. This study was done to determine seropositivity of hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and Human Immunedeficiency Virus (HIV) infections among β-th...
متن کاملSeroprevalence of Human Immunodificiency Virus (HIV) and Hepatitis C Infection In Hemophilic Patients In Iran
Background and Objective: Although transfusion therapy has lead to great improvement in longevity for hemophiliacs, but there have been tragic setbacks especially from transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) .HIV was reported to increase the rate of HCV-related liver failure by 4.2 times. In this study, we aimed to determine the seroprevalence of HIV an...
